Letter from Mr. Paul Doremus, Chairman

Dear Friends,

As Chair of the Board for Seafood Nutrition Partnership, I am excited to reflect on the significant progress we have made in highlighting the vital public health benefits of seafood. The exciting launch of the Fall in Love with Seafood campaign united suppliers in the seafood sector with grocery chains nationwide to educate consumers on the crucial role seafood plays in a healthy, balanced diet.

As the campaign expands, we will continue to enhance consumer awareness of seafood’s essential health benefits. Consumers are increasingly seeking foods that promote mental well-being, support immune health, and fit into their busy lives. Seafood meets these needs, providing abundant nutritional advantages that encourage healthier lifestyles. This campaign has been an exceptional opportunity for us to connect with consumers, share our story, and showcase the progress we’ve made in sustainable practices and advancing nutrition science. I would like to express my gratitude to our dedicated Board of Directors for their strategic vision and commitment, which have been instrumental in shaping our direction. I also extend my appreciation to Dr. Tom Brenna and the Science and Nutrition Advisory Council (SNAC) for their rigorous scientific work, which underpins our mission.

Finally, I want to thank our generous donors and partners. Your support makes our work possible, and we are grateful for your investment in our mission. Together, we can continue making a meaningful impact to help Americans embrace the vital health benefits of seafood.

Sincerely,
Paul Doremus
2023-2024 Chair

Letter from Ms. Linda Cornish, Founder and President

Dear Friends,

Since its founding in 2013, SNP has compelled Americans to include seafood as a crucial part of their diets for better health. Research proves that seafood and its omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain health, heart function, and overall wellness. Regular seafood consumption significantly lowers the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, depression, and certain cancers.

Despite these benefits, 90% of Americans do not meet the guidelines of eating seafood at least twice a week. SNP is taking action to bridge this gap through targeted campaigns, educational outreach, and robust advocacy for nutrition policy. We unite leading experts in public health, nutrition, sustainability, and science to drive meaningful change.

We believe dietary choices directly impact health outcomes, and seafood is a powerful solution to many health issues. With your support, SNP can expand its efforts to build a healthier future for all Americans.

Warmest Regards,
Linda Cornish
Founder and President

INDUSTRY OUTREACH

SNP continues to conduct education, outreach, and pilot campaigns to build awareness of the public health benefits of seafood with great success.

At the Seafood Expo North America (SENA) in March, we held a well-attended session on Driving Consumer Behavior through the Fall in Love with Seafood campaign, and had two fun receptions at the Riverence and Pacific Seafood booths.

Following successful efforts at H-E-B, Hy-Vee, and Weis during the 1st half of 2024, SNP partnered with Harris Teeter and Publix to launch the Fall in Love with Seafood campaign in their markets in September and October respectively. On average the campaigns generated a $4.07 ROI, i.e., every $1 invested in the campaign returned $4+ in incremental seafood sales.

SUMMER SEAFOOD CHALLENGE

Team H-E-B Fish Market and Team Captain Jason Driskill clinched victory at the second annual Summer Seafood Challenge. Teams, team captains, and participants helped raise more than $40,000 from June until August that will support our mission and programming. Funds raised were nearly double last year’s challenge.

8TH ANNUAL STATE OF THE SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM

In September, SNP held the 8th Annual State of the Science Symposium with a theme of Make Every Day Count in Washington, D.C. In her presentation, Dr. Susan Carlson highlighted the positive impact of omega-3’s found in seafood on reducing preterm birth. A comprehensive study concluded that sufficient intake of omega-3s reduces preterm birth by 66%.

Thank you to the State of the Science Symposium Sponsors:

  • Presenting Sponsors: Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, NOAA Fisheries
  • Gold Sponsors: Cargill, StarKist
  • Silver Sponsors: Chilean Salmon Marketing Council, dsm-firmenich, GOED Omega-3
  • Bronze Sponsor: Pacific Seafood Processors Association

EATING FOR BRAIN HEALTH FUNDRAISING DINNER

SNP hosted an Eating for Brain Health fundraising dinner at Erling Jensen The Restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee. In 2022, The White House recognized our commitment to develop Eating for Brain Health (EFBH) nutrition programs nationwide through 2030. EFBH nutrition programs work with local community organizations to educate and empower underserved populations to affordably incorporate seafood for a healthy diet. The Eating for Brain Health fundraising dinners garner local support, collaboration, and awareness of these programs in the communities in which they operate.

END-OF-YEAR GIVING

We rounded out the year asking supporters to make a tax-deductible donation to help SNP continue to build awareness about the nutritional benefits of eating seafood at least 2x a week. Donors who gave $250 or more received a SNP Fall In Love With Seafood ball cap!

SEAFOOD AUTOMATICALLY QUALIFIES FOR “HEALTHY” CLAIM UNDER FDA’S FINAL RULES

In December, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the final rule updating the definition of the voluntary, implied nutrient content claim “healthy.” Under the final rule, the FDA notes that seafood without added ingredients except for water “automatically qualifies” for the “healthy” claim due to its positive nutrient contributions and foundation of healthy eating patterns, as recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
