Omega-3’s found in seafood on reducing preterm birth, which is the leading cause of infant mortality in the U.S. The U.S. preterm birth rate has increased dramatically in recent years and reached 10.4% in 2021.
- Preterm births for Black women are 55% HIGHER than white women.
Recently published clinical guidelines underscore the positive impact of omega-3’s found in seafood on reducing preterm birth. The comprehensive study concluded that sufficient intake of omega-3s reduces preterm birth. Amongst women whose DHA levels were low at the start of the study, preterm birth was reduced by 66%.
Among the new guidelines:
- Women of childbearing age should aim to obtain a regular supply of omega-3 fatty acids from foods providing these fatty acids, including fish and oily fish, and/or from supplements providing DHA & EPA or DHA alone.
- Intakes of up to 1,000 mg of DHA + EPA or DHA alone in pregnancy do not raise safety concerns.
- Recommended intake of omega-3 for women of childbearing age differ depending upon DHA intake at the beginning of pregnancy.
Seafood is an excellent source of omega-3s, which are key nutrients for heart, immune, and mental health. This study also shows that omega-3s can significantly reduce preterm births and save the U.S. over $8 billion in healthcare costs associated with preterm births.
